Updating software on xbox360 live
Here is the page where I found out how to make it work. If you have a writable CD a thumb drive, use the thumb drive, because it's much easier.

Every year Microsoft Drops the console a little bit of code to match the descending leaves, delivering new features, interface tweaks and additional content to hide behind the Xbox Live Gold paywall.
Copy the contents of the file to the root directory of your USB flash drive (for example, E:\).
Just download the file, that's all you need to do there.
NOTE: Microsoft stopped updating their backwards compatibility for original Xbox games years ago.
Note: The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.

Do not copy the contents to another folder on the USB flash drive (for example, E:\Files). Plug the flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically.
